Medicinal Plants of Hindle Ross
The Little Traverse Conservancy presents Lee Brewbaker for a FREE plant and medicinal herb walk and talk at the Hindle Ross trails. We will observe the abundant Monarda in the fields and discuss the medicinal and cultural uses. As we walk the trails, we will encounter and meet other native plants and learn about their uses and cultural significance. Lee started to cultivate his love of plants while gardening with his father, along with the herbal lore shared by his grandmother. With a degree in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan, he then continued learning from wild crafters, herbalists, and the plants themselves. Lee always enjoys sharing his stories and passion about his green relatives.

Spring Foraging for Wild Herbs
North Central Michigan College presents Sierra LaRose, Certified Herbalist, Wild Harvester, and owner of Bear Earth Herbals. Sierra will lead a walk in the woods to learn about wild plants and their properties. This walk will cover plant identification, ethical harvesting, herbal remedy preparation and much more. Bring a notebook and gear for possible changes in weather.
Cost: $30 To register click here.
Location: NCMC Nature Area which is found behind the college at the end of Howard Street
About Sierra LaRose: Growing up in Northern Michigan, Sierra LaRose spent most of her youth in nature exploring, building, tasting and smelling. She developed a deep relationship with the wild and it's many dwellers and by age seven she was determined to move into the forest full time. At sixteen she finally found a way and finished high school a year early to move out into the subtropical forest of Kauai, Hawaii where she spent the majority of the next four years. Every day living out there was truly human for Sierra. Gathering wood and water, plants for food and medicine, and greeting other feral beings were daily events. Sierra's passion for plants and herbalism deepened as she lived closely with the land and learned indigenous ways. Over the years She volunteered on farms and in botanical gardens, and read every plant book she could get her hands on. In 2012 after the birth of her son, Sierra moved back to her home of Northern Michigan and knew it was her destiny to pursue a life in herbal medicine. While starting an eco-friendly cleaning business and working full time cleaning houses, Sierra worked hard to pursue her true passion. She became a certified herbalist and started to develop a product line. By 2015 she transitioned fully from house cleaning to attending five farmers markets a week. Sierra now teaches classes, holds workshops, experiments with techniques in growing and harvesting herbs, develops herbal products, and spreads the word to everyone and anyone willing to learn, hoping to ignite the same passion in others and keep the ancient tradition of herbalism alive.

A mix of open meadows and forested hilly woods are found. Seasonal ponds are known as vernal pools and are especially common in spring and fall.
Join Brad Van Blon, of the Little Traverse Conservancy, on a walk through the preserve identifying and appreciating the beauty and importance of different wildflower species.

Spring Ephemeral Hike
Join us for a peaceful hike at one of our favorite spots to look for spring wildflowers (aka spring ephemerals). Spring ephemeral flowers are short-lived, blooming after the snow melts but before trees and shrubs leaf out. In a matter of only a few short weeks, they bloom, photosynthesize, reproduce, and enter dormancy. Guided by CAKE CISMA Coordinator Katie Gray, we'll unravel the life cycle of these ephemeral beauties, from their brief but spectacular bloom to their crucial role as early-season pollinators for native insects. Learn about their fascinating adaptations, ecological significance, and the role they play in the delicate balance of our natural ecosystems. This hike is suitable for all ages but includes uneven, hilly terrain and may include muddy sections of the trail. If anyone in your party requires special accommodations, such as an interpreter, wheelchair-accessible seating, etc., please contact CAKE CISMA at least three weeks before the event that you plan on attending.
