Walloon Wildflower Walk

Walloon Wildflower Walk

Join us and the Walloon Lake Association & Conservancy for a peaceful hike at one of our favorite spots to look for spring wildflowers (aka spring ephemerals). Spring ephemeral flowers are short-lived, blooming after the snow melts but before trees and shrubs leaf out. In a matter of only a few short weeks, they bloom, photosynthesize, reproduce, and enter dormancy. Guided by CAKE CISMA Coordinator Katie Gray, we'll unravel the life cycle of these ephemeral beauties, from their brief but spectacular bloom to their crucial role as early-season pollinators for native insects. Learn about their fascinating adaptations, ecological significance, and the role they play in the delicate balance of our natural ecosystems. This hike is suitable for all ages but includes uneven, hilly terrain and may include muddy sections of the trail. If anyone in your party requires special accommodations, such as an interpreter, wheelchair-accessible seating, etc., please contact CAKE CISMA at least three weeks before the event that you plan on attending.

What should I bring?  Consider bringing your camera or binoculars. Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort

Location: Fields Preserve, 4175 Resort Pike Rd, Petoskey, MI 49770 To get directions from your location to this hiking spot click here.

A successful biological control program in Canada and New England introduced three parasitoid species that lay eggs in lily beetle larvae, effectively managing this destructive pest. This presentation will cover the biology and life cycle of the scarlet lily beetle, its preference for specific lily varieties, and the ongoing efforts to introduce these biocontrol parasitoids to Michigan to combat the infestation.

Blu Dot Farm & Vineyard, 11399 Boyne City Road, Charlevoix, MI 49720 The entrance is about 2 miles east of the intersection of US-31 and Boyne City Road.  Blu Dot Farm & Vineyard has a long and varied history. The main barn was built sometime in the late 1800’s. The property was originally an asparagus farm. In the mid 1960’s the farm was used to breed and train harness racing horses. In 2019 the current owners planted the first 3 acres of vines with the dream of growing grapes and making wine. The estate vineyard now encompasses roughly 10 acres consisting of 6,000 vines. Each individual vine is handled with care throughout its growing cycle. Blu Dot general manager, Sam Smiertka, will provide us with a tour and share her knowledge of growing grapes in Northern Michigan. You may choose to stay for a wine tasting following our meeting ($15 per person includes a souvenir glass). Please RSVP to Beth bethcowie@mac.com to let her know if you are attending the tour and meeting and if you wish to stay for the optional wine tasting.

The Boyne City Arbor Day celebration is Friday, April 25 from 10 am to Noon inside the pavilion at Veteran's Park. The Importance of Soil with John Caravette

This is a presentation hosted by the Master Gardener Association of Northwest Michigan and is held at the Traverse City Community Garden at The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park. Registration is required. www.mganm.org/events. “Soil is not dirt! Soil is our life support system. It is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, living organisms and water that are vital for healthy plant growth, human nutrition, and regulation of the Earth’s climates. As one of the most significant components of the earth’s ecosystem, human life without soil would be very difficult. Productive and healthy soil is a key to environmental sustainability and helps in the creation of a healthier world." (Source: https://theimportantsite.com/reasons-why-soil-is-important/) This overview will help you better understand the various components that make soil and how important it is in providing a healthy environment so that plants and vegetables can grow and handle pests. Learn about the soil in Northwest Michigan and the ways to improve it. Also tour the Traverse City Community Garden located next to the Botanic Garden John Caravetta received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Soil and Crop Science from Purdue University in Indiana. After graduation, John joined the Indiana Cooperative Extension Service as an Agricultural Extension Agent in northeast Indiana. John's experience beyond his time in Extension includes technical and management positions with a global agricultural chemical manufacturer, and, before retiring to the Traverse City area in late 2020, John served 22 years as Associate Director of the Arizona Department of Agriculture. John is currently a Consulting Agronomist volunteering with the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy and other local organizations.

Presentations offer Continuing Education credits unless otherwise noted. A $5 donation is requested for non-MGANM members. Registration is required. Register here.
