Seed Project: Collecting, Sorting and Distribution
This MSUE approved project has the purpose of growing, sowing and sorting seeds from the gardens of master gardeners for distribution to the public through the NMMGA annual plant salle and MSUE Smart Gardening activities.
NMMGA members contributed seeds from their gardens to the 2025 annual plant sale. For reasons related to package labeling and required germination testing, the 2025 seeds were packaged and distributed with plant identification stakes for free.
Over 600 seed packets were given away in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties.

The first year was a time of learning the process that meets Michigan law standards. An intentional effort will be made in 2026 to sell seed packages at the NMMGA plant sale and distribute for free at NMMGA Smart Gardening events. The packages sold at the annual plant sale would then fund the materials needed for packaging seeds in 2026. It is anticipated that this project will be self-sustained after 2026.
The dates and times for seed sorting and packing are posted to the calendar on this website and are noted in the monthly newletter. All are welcome! Materials and seeds are provided if you are new to this activity. Bring a friend or family member!
