Beekeeping: 1st of 3 sessions

This introductory class is held on Saturday March 7 and 14 at 10 am and on May 9 at 1 pm. This is an introductory class suited for those interested in keeping bees or those just interested in honey and honey bees. Two in-class and one field session. The course is lead by Jim Anglewicz and sponsored by the Little Traverse Bay Beekeepers Guild. The class is held at the North Central Michigan College Library Conference Center in Petoskey.

March 7 topics will include;

  • The historic and current state of the bee industry and what it is like to keep bees

  • A demonstration of various equipment types and materials used in beekeeping

  • Basic bee biology

  • How to maintain a bee colony

March 14 topics will include;

  • Honey- tasting, benefits and myths, harvesting honey and other bee products

  • Overwintering bees in Northern Michigan

  • Making queens and growing your apiary

May 9, 1-2:30 pm: Field experience at Forest Apiaries

We will open and inspect various hives and demonstrate some management techniques. Protective bee wear is mandatory for this session.
